An exciting field of 21 two-year-old fillies have nominated for the 2014 Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens this weekend, all hoping to claim a ballot exemption for the major Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) on April 5th.
Having produced two strong results in her short racing career to date, Bring Me The Maid has been included in nominations for the Magic Night Stakes by trainer Peter Moody.
Claiming a resounding victory in the Listed Sports 1000 (1000m) at Flemington on March 1st, Bring Me The Maid was unable to make the most of a good barrier and favouritism in the Listed St Albans Stakes (1200m) most recently, finishing a length off the pace in third.
Owned by the syndicate of Wylie Dalzeil and the late, great Roy Higgins, Bring Me The Maid will have to reach a new peak if to overcome a final field that is likely to include Team Hawkes-trained pair Lady Sharapova and London Lolly.
Lady Sharapova produced a strong turn of foot in the final straight of the Listed Talindet Stakes (1100m) in her only race start to date, finishing third behind talented opponents Marcado and Orujo.
Arguably offering Team Hawkes the best chance of success in the Magic Night Stakes, London Lolly has quickly built to the task at hand since placing a competitive fourth in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) on debut, unlucky to finish second in a two-year-old fillies event at Moonee Valley before winning the St Albans Stakes last time out.
Trainer Gerald Ryan, who has also nominated Aerobar and Lanikai for appearances in the 2014 Magic Night Stakes, is offered two legitimate chances of victory this weekend, forwarding exciting two-year-olds Peggy Jean and Tetsuko for position’s in the Group 2’s final field.
Peggy Jean is yet to finish outside the places in three race starts so far, finishing an unlucky second in the 2.Y.O Fillies Maiden Plate (1000m) at Kensington on debut before scoring a huge win over Boomwaa in the Inglis Classic (1200m) on January 18th before finishing third in a two-year-old handicap event over 1200 metres most recently.
Tetsuko is arguably the formed-filly of all 2014 Magic Night Stakes nominees, finishing second in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) on debut, winning the 2.Y.O Fillies Maiden Plate on February 26th before producing a strong final straight sprint to claim third in the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) behind Believe Yourself and Twirl last time out.
Following a disappointing run for seventh against the talented field of the Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill last weekend, trainer David Hayes has elected to nominate Clifton Red for a final attempt at Golden Slipper entry in the 2014 Magic Night Stakes.
While not featuring as a leading contender amongst the current crop of two-year-olds, Clifton Red has displayed good potential in her two race starts so far, scoring a strong victory in the Group 3 NSW Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) prior to her Reisling Stakes appearance.
A final field of 16 + four emergencies for the 2014 Magic Night Stakes is due for release on Wednesday morning.
