Exciting Field Confirmed for 2014 Magic Night Stakes

March 26th, 2014

Despite sharing the same Rosehill Gardens race card with three Group 1 races this weekend, the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) for fillies is shaping as one of the most hotly-contested events of the day, with 16 talented two-year-olds confirmed in the final field.

Yet to finish outside the places in two competitive race starts to date, talented filly Bring Me The Maid has been confirmed for an appearance in the Magic Night Stakes on Saturday.

Bring Me The Maid debuted with an impressive victory in the Listed Sports 1000 (1000m) on March 1st, securing a strong run for third in the Listed St Albans Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley last time out.

Trainer Peter Moody holds the exciting Sebring filly in particularly high regard, and is confident in-form jockey Chad Schofield can find good position early in the Magic Night Stakes when leaving from barrier 10.

Despite a less-than-favourable run for fourth after jumping as favourite in the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) two weeks ago, trainer Lee Curtis is confident talented filly Press Report can secure her maiden race win in the Magic Night Stakes this weekend.

Debuting with a strong run for second in the Blackwoods AAP Industries Plate (1100m) on November 30th, Press Report (barrier 9) was arguably most impressive when claiming second in the Group 2 Silver Slipper (1100m) first-up this year, comfortably beating leading Golden Slipper chances Risen From Doubt and Unencumbered to the line.

Having ruled out an appearance in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) for the daughter of Written Tycoon, Lees has outlined the Group 3 Royal Randwick Stakes (1200m) at the major target for Press Report this season, with the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on April 12th also a possibility following results this weekend.

Trainer Gerald Ryan is offered two legitimate chances of 2014 Magic Night Stakes glory this weekend, having accepted positions for talented stable mates Peggy Jean and Tetsuko (barrier 13).

Yet to finish outside the places in three race starts to date, Peggy Jean debuted with an impressive run for second in the ATC Membership On Sale Maiden (1000m) before finishing in the clear of a classy field that included Boomwaa in the Inglis Classic Open (1200m) and claiming third over 1200 metres most recently.

Arguably the biggest winner of all early Magic Night Stakes frontrunners at Wednesday’s barrier draw, Peggy Jean will have the edge over her competitors from the get-go this weekend when leaving from the ideal gate 5.

Also yet to finish outside the places in three race starts to date, Tetsuko was unlucky to finish second to Alpha Miss in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) on debut in October, but was able to go one better in her very next race when jogging home to claim the Big Sports Breakfast Plate (1100m).

Finishing third in the Sweet Embrace Stakes most recently, Tetsuko is continually climbing towards peak condition ahead of a major tilt at the Royal Randwick Stakes on April 19th.

Having nominated classy stable mates Lady Sharapova and London Lolly for the Magic Night Stakes, Team Hawkes have elected send only the former to Rosehill Gardens this weekend, accepting a position in the Group 3 Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville for London Lolly.

Finishing third in the Listed Talindert Stakes (1100m) in her only competitive start to date, Lady Sharapova is in line to lay a serious claim on the Magic Night Stakes, having been allocated the central barrier 7 and confirmed to be partnered by leading jockey Damien Oliver.
